CRACKER!: THE BEST DOG IN VIETNAM
In the novel Cracker!: The Best Dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadotha, the main character Rick shows that he is protective of his intelligent war-dog Shep, Cracker.This historical fiction novel takes place during in Vietnam during the Vietnam War (late 60’s-early 70’s, not specified). Cracker, a streetwise city canine is forced into the Vietnam war as a war-dog. Rick, a military newcomer is paired up with Cracker, and sooner than expected, the duo is sent on a dangerous Special Ops mission, in the eerie jungles of Bien Hoa, both risking their lives. A huge ambush of Vietnam soldiers are spotted in the distance, rapidly firing their AK-47s. Cracker goes on Rick’s back, attempting to protect him from the bullets. Worried, Rick quietly snaps “Cracker! Get down!” (pg. 191). Rick is telling Cracker to get off of him not only because their position would be given away, but Cracker would be shot. However, Cracker doesn’t understand; she needs to protect Rick. After Rick’s words and actions, it is clear that he is protective of Cracker.
